THE CD REVIEWS

THE PLAZA YouTube

"And if people are causing us a lot of grief, we give them the power to give us that grief because we don't have to do anything. It's their fault. Giving other people power is really not taking the responsibility for being truly you, allowing you to inform yourself - your body, your mind - about its responsibility in life. We are all completely responsible for learning who we are, where we reside. And that's the journey we're all on."   B. R.

"It's their fault."

01.  "Everyone has a story. You can call it the story of your life, but almost nobody has a true story."   B. R.

02.  "I often wonder how you managed to invent yourself."  Dangerous Liaisons [1988]

03.  "To convince an audience that an illusion is real the magician creates a plausible diversion."  Victor Victoria  (the movie)

04.  "We weave together this tale that we present to the world as us and almost everyone of us knows it's not true or not true enough."   B. R.

05.  "The truth has become merely half-truth."   Depeche Mode

06.  "The fewer the facts, the stronger the opinion."    Arnold H. Glasgow

07.  "If you must tell me your opinions, tell me what you believe in. I have plenty of doubts of my own."   Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

   THE REVIEWS

B. R.:
-  "If you choose to surrender, if you choose to detach, if you choose to step back, if you choose to love and forgive, all of those kinds of choices, no karma. It's when you build tension with tension that creates awful, awful things that happen in your lives, and that goes on with many many people lifetime after lifetime. You can't escape it because it's so dense. The only release from that process is step back and make conscious choices and know that everything that comes at you in your life - from this second on - is an opportunity to free yourself, or to get more deeply caught. It's totally your choice."

-  "You want it changed, you do it."

"But the teacher is full of shadow just like you, and the teacher is very aware of shadow. And the great thing about being a teacher or a student, who's working this through, is you look at the shadow and you go, 'Yes, this too, this too.' And therefore, when you accept your darkness, when you accept your imperfection, when you accept your shit (when everybody is literally full of it) - when you accept it - it no longer is an obstacle to your surrender to yourself. So, if you're trying to just present one-half, half of you is not functioning properly, half of you is not present. The part of you that is not present is going to cause you a lot of grief. You have to bring the grief to the table. You have to go, 'This too, I surrender all of it. I bring it all forward. I say yes to this.'"

"Accept me like this, too."

"Something in you will judge your life. Something in you will, in a sense, grade it. It will acknowledge it. And you will feel a sense of 'I worked hard and I tried and I did my best,' or 'I really found a kind of triumph in small ways that made my life distinguished,' or 'I lived a really remarkable life.' But, you may also discover at that moment a kind of shame that you didn't rise to the occasion at all, that you just spun your wheels for however many years, and that was it. And there's a kind of judgment in that, I kind of sadness in that, and a sense that it was a wasted experience, that it wasn't worth existing, that coming in to life was somehow wasted on you.

And you, trust me, do not want that to be the case.

You don't have to do something that is celebrated. You don't have to be celebrated at all. But you have to do the work inside you that knows that you met adversity with a kind of optimism, a kind of continual response and effort, that you gave yourself to life as fully as you can. You are not responsible for all the circumstances. Some people are going to attract adversity upon adversity upon adversity upon adversity, but if you are holding your head high at the end of that, you have done something extraordinary."

"...you have done something extraordinary." B. R.

"'I have done you,' I said slowly, 'an injustice.'
'Everyone does,' she said indifferently. 'I look in the mirror. I see an old face. Wrinkles. Yellow skin. As society is now constituted, to present this appearance is to be thrust into a category. Old woman, therefore silly, troublesome, can be pushed around.'
'No,' I said. 'It's not true.'
'Unless of course,' she added as if I hadn't spoken, 'one is an achiever. Achievement is the savior of the very old.'"
